You have mastered photo and text posts, maybe you have even shared couple-minute videos. Now you want to start posting short videos, but which platform should you spend your time on? Both Instagram Reels and TikToks are the best performing short video formats compared to other platforms. This blog post will give you more information to help you decide which platform you should focus your social media posting on.

Benefits of Instagram Reels

Access to over 1.3 billion users on Instagram. Facebook is still the platform with the most users but Instagram is very close. When you post a Reel to Instagram you have the possibility to reach more people than TikTok. If you decide to do a paid Reel ad, your reach will be further making the ROI higher!

Most users are Millennials. If Millenials are the target audience you would like to reach, Reels is the clear choice. Almost half of the users are between the age of 25 and 44. Teenage users are very low, as is the percentage of Gen X.

Video editing is more complex but intuitive. TikTok is relatively new which means it has fewer features for editing than Instagram. Instagram has been developing their software in Stories, so despite being second to start sharing in-feed short-form videos the bells-and-whistles are better.

Larger captions. If you want to be able to provide a lot of information and direction in your caption, Instagram Reels allow up to 2000 characters in the caption and TikTok only allows 100 (this is shorter than Twitter at 280).

Benefits of TikToks

1 billion users and growing fast. While TikTok is behind Instagram right now, its user count is growing every day. It is currently the fastest-growing app ever! Hopping on a bandwagon to market your business is not a bad idea in this case.

Younger and more diverse audience. This platform is most popular amongst Gen Z and there are users around the world! If you are trying to grow your international audience and get sales from more countries, TikTok can help.

More music options. TikTok used to be called Musically so it has always been an audio-focused app. Instagram doesn’t have as large of a database as TikTok because of Facebook’s focus on copyright. This doesn’t look like it will change soon.

Options to incorporate other videos. The Stitch or Duet tool is exclusive to TikTok. You can join in on conversations and trends in an entirely different way than you could on Instagram.
