On April 25th, Twitter announced it accepted Elon Musk’s offer to buy the company. What does this mean for how the platform operates? This is still up in the air, but Musk has been open about some of the changes he plans on making to Twitter that can affect your social media posting.

Changes to expect on Twitter

Loosen up content rules. As a large proponent of free speech, Elon Musk had made it clear one of his main priorities is to reduce moderation on the app. Most businesses stay away from controversial topics, but for brands that work in the hemp industry (or similar unconventional industries) this may help avoid their tweets from getting deleted.

Create an edit button. Users have been begging for this for a long time and it seems like Musk may finally deliver. Twitter has been the only platform that doesn’t allow edits to existing posts. When you make a typo you could only delete and repost, but hopefully, this new feature makes it simpler to fix typing mistakes.

Expose how the algorithm works. Every marketer works around the secretive algorithm. Since Musk cares so much about free speech and honesty, it makes sense that he wants to share how exactly posts are filtered in a user’s feed. While others believe the software would be hard to understand, it could still help businesses reach their target audience.

War on bots. Every social media platform has bots (fake accounts run by spammy businesses) but Elon Musk has spoken out about defeating the bots and authenticating real human accounts. If users can visually see which accounts are run by humans and which are bots, it will help reduce individuals falling for scams.

Dump advertisements. The majority of Twitter’s revenue comes from advertisements, but if the platform becomes privately owned, it is less likely Elon Musk will need as much revenue from large ads. There is still a need to make money so he may move towards a subscription option.
